Hello Teresa, :=) It's a beautiful plant and flower. I once had one, and it had to be watered from the top, just inside the plant. I think it is the same plant because the leaves also look the same as the one I had. but please correct me if I'm wrong.
You were right about the insect being a wasp. It is the Cicada Killer Wasp. Wing length three inches long.
